Compositions
One of my great joys is taking scraps that could easily end up being thrown away and making something creative and giving them new life. Since I use mostly hand-dyed fabrics and batiks in my work, the leftover pieces are a wonderful source of materials. This gives me the opportunity to be spontaneous and very free style.
The exercise I give myself is to take a large tub of scraps, open it up and pull pieces of different sizes, shapes and colors. It is so much fun to take pieces out one by one without altering the shape and/or size and put them on my design wall and let the fabric speak to me and tell me where it is going. Usually a design will emerge rather quickly and then other shapes and colors are added to enhance the design. These are usually made with raw edges. Many times I will completely sew the shapes and then run the completed top through the washing machine and dryer to let the edges fray to complete an organic look and feel. Then the piece is squared and quilted.
